Department of History & Political Science

HIPS Collage

MISSION AND PROGRAM

The mission of the Department of History & Political Science is to be an organization of faculty and staff who are committed to excellence and integrity and whose collective goal is service to others through positive contributions that enrich and impact our region in general and our students in particular.

We mentor students pursuing studies in history and political science and related fields, preparing students to meet the growing demand for research, analytical, and critical thinking skills in Central Georgia and beyond. These skills are applicable in nearly every field of professional endeavor. Our majors find careers in education, electronic and print media, politics, government service, non-profit organizations, and lobbying, among other areas.

The department actively supports research on the part of both faculty and students, as a means of promoting deeper understanding and open intellectual discourse. Our faculty are engaged in outreach activities designed to increase historical and political awareness both within MGA and in the broader community. We also support the general education mission of the university by teaching introductory courses in history and political science in the core curriculum.
